And now I, Moroni, proceed to give an account of those ancient inhabitants who were destroyed by the hand of the Lord upon the face of this north country.

And I take mine account from the twenty and four plates which were found by the people of Limhi, which is called the Book of Ether.

Therefore I do not write those things which transpired from the days of Adam until that time; but they are had upon the plates; and whoso findeth them, the same will have power that he may get the full account.

But behold, I give not the full account, but a part of the account I give, from the tower down until they were destroyed.

And on this wise do I give the account. He that wrote this record was Ether, and he was a descendant of Coriantor.

Coriantor was the son of Moron.

And Moron was the son of Ethem.

And Ethem was the son of Ahah.

And Ahah was the son of Seth.

And Seth was the son of Shiblon.

And Shiblon was the son of Com.

And Com was the son of Coriantum.

And Morianton was a descendant of Riplakish.

And Riplakish was the son of Shez.

Which Jared came forth with his brother and their families, with some others and their families, from the great tower, at the time the Lord confounded the language of the people, and swore in his wrath that they should be scattered upon all the face of the earth; and according to the word of the Lord the people were scattered.

And it came to pass that the brother of Jared did cry unto the Lord, and the Lord had compassion upon Jared; therefore he did not confound the language of Jared; and Jared and his brother were not confounded.

Then Jared said unto his brother: Cry again unto the Lord, and it may be that he will turn away his anger from them who are our friends, that he confound not their language.

And it came to pass that the brother of Jared did cry unto the Lord, and the Lord had compassion upon their friends and their families also, that they were not confounded.

And it came to pass that the brother of Jared did cry unto the Lord according to that which had been spoken by the mouth of Jared.

And it came to pass that the Lord did hear the brother of Jared, and had compassion upon him, and said unto him:

And when thou hast done this thou shalt go at the head of them down into the valley which is northward. And there will I meet thee, and I will go before thee into a land which is choice above all the lands of the earth.

And there will I bless thee and thy seed, and raise up unto me of thy seed, and of the seed of thy brother, and they who shall go with thee, a great nation. And there shall be none greater than the nation which I will raise up unto me of thy seed, upon all the face of the earth. And thus I will do unto thee because this long time ye have cried unto me.

I, Moroni, now give an account of those ancient people who were destroyed by the hand of the Lord in this land to the north. I take my account from the twenty-four plates that the people of Limhi found, the record called the book of Ether.

The first part of this record tells about the creation of the world, Adam, the history from that time down to the great tower, and everything that happened among the people until then. I think the Jews already have all of that. So I don't write what happened from Adam's day down to that time. It is on the plates, and whoever finds them will be able to get the full account. I'm not giving the full account, only a part of it, from the tower down to the time they were destroyed.

This Jared came out from the great tower with his brother, their families, and some others with their families, at the time when the Lord confused the language of the people and swore in his wrath that they would be scattered over the whole face of the earth. And according to the word of the Lord, they were scattered.

The brother of Jared was a large and powerful man, a man highly favored by the Lord. So Jared, his brother, said to him, "Call out to the Lord, so that he won't confuse us and we will still understand our own words." So the brother of Jared called out to the Lord, and the Lord had compassion on Jared, so he didn't confuse his language. Jared and his brother weren't confused.

Then Jared said to his brother, "Call out to the Lord again. Maybe he'll turn his anger away from our friends and not confuse their language either." So the brother of Jared called out to the Lord, and the Lord had compassion on their friends and families too, and they weren't confused.

Then Jared said to his brother again, "Go and ask the Lord whether he will drive us out of the land, and if he does, ask him where we should go. And who knows but the Lord may carry us away to a land more favored than any on earth? And if that happens, let's be faithful to the Lord, so we can receive it as our inheritance." So the brother of Jared called out to the Lord, just as Jared had asked. And the Lord heard the brother of Jared, had compassion on him, and said to him:

"Go and gather your flocks, male and female of every kind, the seeds of the earth of every kind, your families, Jared your brother and his family, your friends and their families, and Jared's friends and their families. When you have done this, you shall go at their head down into the valley that is northward. And there I will meet you, and I will go before you into a land choice above all the lands of the earth. And there I will bless you and your posterity, and I will raise up to myself a great nation out of your posterity, the posterity of your brother, and those who go with you. And there will be no nation greater anywhere on the face of the earth than the one I will raise up to myself out of your posterity. And this I will do for you because for this long time you have called out to me."

And it came to pass that the brother of Jared did cry unto the Lord, and the Lord had compassion upon Jared; therefore he did not confound the language of Jared; and Jared and his brother were not confounded.

Then Jared said unto his brother: Cry again unto the Lord, and it may be that he will turn away his anger from them who are our friends, that he confound not their language.
