- 1Nephi hands the small plates to his brother Jacob and dies. A king reigns in his place, and the people begin to grow proud and seek after gold.
- 2Jacob preaches at the temple against pride and riches — seek the kingdom of God first — and against the men who have broken their wives' hearts.
- 3Jacob turns to the pure in heart, tells the Nephites the Lamanites keep a commandment they have broken, and orders them to stop reviling them.
- 4Jacob on why they write on plates at all, on being reconciled to God through Christ, and on the stone the Jews rejected becoming the foundation.
- 5Zenos's allegory of the olive tree: the master grafts, prunes, and digs for centuries, weeps over his vineyard, and calls his servants a last time.
