The Nephites' last stand

- 1Ammaron tells ten-year-old Mormon where the records are hidden and when to fetch them. At fifteen he is visited of the Lord, and forbidden to preach.
- 2Mormon leads a Nephite army at sixteen. His people mourn, but it is the sorrow of the damned, not repentance — and he knows the difference.
- 3The Nephites swear vengeance and vow to go up against their enemies, so Mormon refuses to lead them, and turns to write to a much later reader.
- 4City after city falls — Desolation, Teancum, Boaz. Mormon writes that it is by the wicked that the wicked are punished.
- 5Mormon takes command again without hope, knowing what is coming. He explains who this record is for, and what the Gentiles should make of it.
- 6Cumorah. Mormon writes to the Lamanite king to ask for the meeting, watches twenty-three commanders and their ten thousands fall, and mourns the fair ones.
- 7Mormon's last words, to the remnant who survive: know that you are of the house of Israel, lay down your weapons, and believe the record.
- 8Moroni is alone. His father is dead, the Nephites are gone, and he writes to people he can see but who are not yet born, and names what they will love.
- 9Moroni to those who deny miracles: God does not change, and stops working miracles only when people stop believing. Then an apology for the writing.
